Arran Distillery's history is fascinating, reviving a centuries-old illicit tradition on the island. Arran had a rich history of illegal farm stills until bans in the late 1700s, with "Arran Waters" smuggled to the mainland after 150+ years of no legal distilling, the modern Lochranza distillery was built in 1995. Construction at Lochranza was halted by nesting golden eagles, and the distillery was later opened by Queen Elizabeth II, who received casks for William and Harry. Arran's distinctive production style include use of Douglas Fir wooden washbacks for longer fermentation, creating fruity spirits, and employ unique still shapes and non-chill filtration for a purer, fuller flavour. Added in 2019 sister site at Lagg is experimental second distillery on the other side of the island, the site of all the company’s peated production.
The island's diverse landscape inspired the distillery's focus, with Lochranza (unpeated Highland-style) and Lagg (peated Lowland-style) reflecting this contrast and creating a unique "Scotland in Miniature" whisky story from illicit stills to royal visits and global recognition.
