The James Sedgwick Distillery lies in Wellington, South Africa. It carries a history as rich as whisky itself. Founded by Captain James Sedgwick, the distillery started in 1833. He sailed for the British East India Company before retiring in 1850. He then set up J. Sedgwick & Co., selling quality liquor, tobacco, and cigars. After his death, his sons grew the business. They made their own brandy and wines and sold imports. In 1886, they bought land by the Berg River. This is where the distillery is today.

The distillery is famous for Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky and the Three Ships range. It leads South Africa's whisky scene. The distillery made the country's first whisky blend and the first single malt and grain whiskies. They do everything on-site, from milling to blending.

1977 was the year they began making the first commercial whisky in Africa. While respecting the traditions and craftsmanship of the northern distillers they forged ahead in their own way, own mastery and techniques, reflecting on the beginnings of the distillery in Wellington, which can be traced back to the story of James Sedgwick, with the vision that a truly South African whisky was not only possible, but could be world-class. Today, these three ships have von  a global recognition of modern, pioneering, and truly South African whiskies.

The principles that define the Three Ships are the finest ingredients, an innovative distillery, hand-selected casks, patience and the vision of a passionate Master Distiller. The South African spirit of vision, tenacity and bravery - qualities required to make a globally awarded whisky in a climate that doesn’t lend itself easily to it. Each bottle is a piece of history and shows South Africa's beauty and the legacy of James Sedgwick’s Distillery has been built over many years.
