McGibbon's Premium Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky in No 1 Widebody Golf Club Shaped Decanter from 1990s (70cl, 43%)
McGibbon’s Premium Reserve in the iconic No 1 Widebody Golf Club Shaped Decanter presented In unique green wooden frame is a collectible blended Scotch whisky produced by Douglas Laing & Co (via subsidiary Douglas McGibbon & Co). Emerging in the 1970s and 1980s, these hand-filled decanters were designed to blend Scotland’s passions for golf and high-quality whisky, often featuring a high proportion of aged malts and Oloroso Sherry cask influence. Unlike some novelty bottles, the Premium Reserve is known for high-quality rich dark amber profile. The whisky is matured in a blend of first and second-fill ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks.
Part of McGibbon's Golf Range which earned Douglas Laing the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1990.
After being popular in the 80s, the golf-themed decanters were relaunched by Douglas Laing in 2014 to capitalize on renewed interest. While the Premium Reserve is generally in the golf bag, other variants (Special Reserve) are shaped like a 3-wood club head. The decanters are highly prized by collectors, with older bottles rarely showing up in auctions.
Douglas McGibbon & Co were established in 1947 becoming a subsidiary of independent bottler, Douglas Laing, in 1950. They are perhaps best known for their McGibbon's blend and its golf-themed decanters, but for many years produced the Provenance brand for single malts as well. When Douglas Laing was carved up between brothers Stewart and Fred in 2013, the McGibbon's and Provenance brands were retained by Fred as part of Douglas Laing firm, with other notable labels such as the Old Malt Cask going the other way, to Stewart's newly founded Hunter Laing. Nowadays the Provenance brand is part of the main Douglas Laing portfolio, with Douglas McGibbon the named bottler on Clan Denny releases.
To coincide with the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles Douglas Laing re-launched their McGibbon's Golf Range which earned Douglas Laing the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement in 1990. Uniting Scotland’s heritage of golf and Scotch Whisky, both are Small Batch specialist bottlings at 43% alcohol strength which are hand-bottled into limited edition ceramic decanters.
