Wolfburn No 128 Small Batch Release (70cl, 46%)
The first small batch whisky produced in 2017 by the alchemists from Thurso ‘Wolfburn No.128’. Matured in smaller casks from a lightly peated spirit, No.128 provides us with our first proper look at a smokier Wolfburn.
The lighted peated spirit of 128 has been matured in slightly unusual 100 litre (close to the size of a Quarter Cask) first-fill ex-bourbon casks. Smaller casks usually mature at a faster rate given the higher level of contact between liquid and wood.
*** Wolfburn Batch No.128 Bottling Note
A small batch release from the Wolfburn distillery, showing off their single malt Scotch whisky after a maturation in 100 litre first-fill ex-bourbon casks. The name comes from where these little rascals were matured: warehouse 1, stow 28. Batch No.128 is a release of 6,000 bottles. ***
Wolfburn distillery is the most northerly on the Scottish mainland, located in the town of Thurso. The original Wolfburn distillery was built in 1821 by William Smith, and was operational for around 30 years before closing. The current Wolfburn distillery was built as close to the site of the original as possible, just 350 metres from its ruins. Distilling began there in January 2013.
