Mortlach 25 Year Old (50cl, 43.4%) ***sold***
This 2.81 distilled 25 year old expression of Mortlach was released in 2014 and is the oldest expression to be released by Mortlach since its re-launch. The bottle design was inspired by George Cowie a previous owner who as a Victorian engineer helped build the Mortlach Distillery.
The oldest expression from the 2014 release of Mortlach single malt Scotch whiskies is their 25 Year Old. Mortlach use whisky matured mostly in refill American oak casks, aged for a quarter of a century before bottling the whisky into these remarkably designed bottles. Along with the Rare Old, the 18 Year Old and the travel retail exclusive Special Strength, there's now a handsome selection of Mortlach single malts to enjoy - quite a contrast to years previous, when official bottlings were few and far between.
Mortlach was founded in 1823 and was the first of Dufftown's "Seven Stills" to be licensed. It rose to pre-eminence under George Cowie & Son, who's unique distillation regime produced a famously "meaty" whisky, which was highly prized by blenders. It was for this reason that it was acquired by John Walker & Sons, and so important to them was it that little stock was left available for bottling as a single malt. The Flora & Fauna release was the first official distillery bottling, but it was not until 2014 that Mortlach was bottled under its own fully fledged single malt brand.
