Hazelburn 8 Year Old First Edition "The Stills" Inaugural Release by Springbank Distillery (70cl, 46%)

This is the inaugural release of Hazelburn. The label features one of three pieces of artwork from Ian Gray, that were commissioned to mark the occasion, and prints of which were also available at the time of the release. This one is The Stills edition.

This is part of the trio of 8 year old that comprised the first Hazelburn release. The label here depicts "the stills" at Springbank, with "the casks" and "the maltings" completing the set. The label art was painted by artist, Ian Gray, and there were 1700 of each produced.

For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas, ultimately it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.

With the first distillation taking place in 1997, Springbank's triple distilled, un-peated Hazelburn expression was launched in 2005. Named after the original Hazelburn distillery, which was once the largest producing distillery in Campbeltown, and where the Grandfather of Japanese whisky, Masataka Taketsuru learned his trade; this light and fruity dram has proved a hit since its introduction.

Springbank distillery has been owned and operated by the Mitchell family in Campbeltown since 1837, and it one of Scotland's most revered distilleries. Following a brief mothballing between 1979 and 1987, upon the reopening the decision was taken to cease all sales to the blending industry and focus on its single malt sales. Today it is one of the only distilleries to malt, distil, bottle and mature whisky on the same site, and produces three distinct and highly prized single malts.
