Glenmorangie Private Edition 2009 Sonnalta PX (70cl, 46%) ***sold***
Released in 2009, Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX was the first of the distillery's Private Collection bottlings. The whisky has been finished in casks formerly containing Pedro Ximenez sherry.
Having spent 10 long years maturing in American white oak casks this whisky is transferred into Spanish ex-Pedro Ximenez (PX) casks for its final two years of extra-maturation. Often described as the 'king of sherry casks' this rare wood was brought back from Jerez in Spain by our head of whisky creation Dr Bill Lumsden. Safely back in Tain it can then begin to weave its magic into Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, adding the famous sweetness and intensity of the cask's previous resident. Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX is the first release in our prestigious Private Edition range: carefully selected, limited edition whiskies chosen from the 'cabinet of curiosities' of Dr Bill Lumsden, head of our Whisky Creation Team. Non chill-filtered.
Despite being owned by blenders, MacDonald & Muir, for most of the 20th century, Glenmorangie had an early focus on bottling its single malt. Some records show that its single malt was being sold as early as the late 19th century. This became the distillery's main output in 1959, and with the unique flavours derived from Scotland's tallest stills, Glenmorangie is now one of the world's biggest selling malts. As a result, the distillery portfolio over the years has been extensive, and little has been spared for independent bottlers. Pioneers of cask finishes, the distillery has never shied away from experimentation, and under the guiding hand of Maestro Dr Bill Lumsden they continue to release a variety of expressions to keep "The Sixteen Men of Tain" rushed off their feet.
