Glenmorangie Private Edition 2014 Companta (70cl, 46%) ***sold***

Inspired by Dr Bill’s travels across France’s greatest vineyards and the friends made along the way, Companta is a refined balance between bold spice and rich, smooth sweetness; the result of a careful assemblage of spirit extra matured in casks from a famous Grand cru ‘Monopole’ in Bourgogne and those of a lusciously sweet fortified wine from Côtes du Rhône.

The Glenmorangie Companta is the 2014 Private Edition release from the Northern Highlands distillery, following on from Ealanta, which was named as World Whisky of the Year 2014 by Jim Murray. After an initial maturation in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, the Companta was matured in 60% Burgundy wine casks from Clos de Tart and 40% Rhône Valley casks that previously held Rasteau, sourced by Glenmorangie's Director of Distilling, Dr. Bill Lumsden. The result is an exceedingly well made cherry red, non chill-filtered single malt that fits perfectly into the continuing range of experimental releases from Glenmorangie.

Despite being owned by blenders, MacDonald & Muir, for most of the 20th century, Glenmorangie had an early focus on bottling its single malt. Some records show that its single malt was being sold as early as the late 19th century. This became the distillery's main output in 1959, and with the unique flavours derived from Scotland's tallest stills, Glenmorangie is now one of the world's biggest selling malts. As a result, the distillery portfolio over the years has been extensive, and little has been spared for independent bottlers. Pioneers of cask finishes, the distillery has never shied away from experimentation, and under the guiding hand of Maestro Dr Bill Lumsden they continue to release a variety of expressions to keep "The Sixteen Men of Tain" rushed off their feet.
