Glen Elgin 18 Year Old 1998 (Special Release 2017) (70cl, 54.8%) ***sold***

Bottle No 792 of 5352.

Sophisticated Speysider from the little-known Glen Elgin distillery. This 18-year-old whisky is made by combining whisky matured in two types of casks: sherry-style butts and refill European oak. This whisky was made in experimental fashion and some of the spirit was distilled using a yeast more commonly found in the production of millet beer.

Part of the Special Releases 2017 line-up, this unusual Glen Elgin expression turns heads for perhaps the most unglamorous of reasons – yeast. Two totally different yeast strains, in fact. A vatting of two batches, one part of this 18 year old expression made use of Pombe yeast in fermentation, and the other was produced using the more conventional cerevisiae yeast. The first batch was then matured on ex-bodega casks, with the second destined for refill European oak butts. The result? A temptingly creamy whisky offering a twist on the typical Speyside character. Just 5,352 bottles have been released worldwide.

Still integral to the White Horse blend and ranked 'top class' by blenders, Glen Elgin was the last distillery to be built on Speyside for nearly 60 years after its completion in 1900. It briefly appeared in the Flora & Fauna range but Diageo soon decided to draw more attention to four of their malts - Glen Elgin, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and Glen Ord - by creating the Hidden Malts range.
